Alex Friedman creates environments for performance – in found locations, onstage, and on the body.

Recent projects include costume designs for A Dreamplay and scenography and puppet design for Pomegranate Jam: A Shadow Ballet, an adaptation of the Persephone myth that premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Prior to attending CalArts, Alex designed scenery throughout the SF Bay Area, with companies like Crowded Fire Theater, Impact Theater, and Berkeley Playhouse. She also worked as a studio assistant for Daniel Ostling and as a scenic artist at the Berkeley Repertory Theater.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Alex is a native of New York City and an alumna of Brandeis University. She is currently a part of the international ensemble creating The Gap, a new piece being co-produced by the CalArts Center for New Performance and L’École de la Comédie de Saint-Étienne, and directed by Arnaud Meunier.
